My Most Important Fall Lawn Tip

Here’s a little known lawn secret: If you have a Bluegrass, Fescue or Ryegrass lawn, your grass roots are still growing in your soil that is warmer than air temperatures. Even if you’ve already fed this fall, another feeding now can really help build your grass roots. So put on your gloves and ear muffs and get out your lawn spreader, and feed your lawn one more time with Scotts Turf Builder WinterGuard.

You won’t be alone. Expert turf researchers will be doing the same thing with their lawns. For example, Ohio State University turf experts say you should get your last winterizing feeding down by the middle of November. Virginia Tech, Penn State and Michigan State Agronomists also agree that you get a big benefit from a November feeding. So, even if you are in the far north, this coming weekend is not too late to get your lawn fed.

I have more good news for you. Rather than raking your tree leaves, save time by mowing them to dime size just prior to feeding. This will help them “compost on your lawn”. This video from Michigan State turf agronomist Rebecca Finneran shows you how you can “throw away your rake” this fall.

One last bit of advice. If you’ve got weeds and want to spread Turf Builder WinterGuard with Plus 2 Weed Control instead of Turf Builder WinterGuard, your mid-day temps need to still reach 60 degrees the day you apply.

I applied weed killer one month ago, and over seeding TODAY (quite some big bare spots). There is still a lot of weed, but I just spread grass seed anyway. I don’t care whatever amount of grass seed can germinate, and I expect quite some grass seed will germinate within one week (based on previous year’s experience, good grass seed, straw, Scotts Turf Builder Starter Food for New Grass, watering twice a day)

I would like to apply WinterGuard Fall Weed & Feed around thanksgiving. Will it kill young grass? By the time, I should mow new grass at least three times.

Too much weed, every fall after overseeding, lawn looks much better, it looks ok till next summer, then weed grows like crazy and grass die. I apply Crabgrass Preventer & Weed Control every spring, also apply weed killer too. It only happens to backyard lawn, front yard lawn looks much better with less maintenance. It is headache to keep repairing backyard lawn. Maybe the land(quite some big trees were there 3 years ago and all those trees were removed) is not good for lawn.

Most recommend 3 cuttings before application of fertilizer or ‘weed ‘n feed’. If the weeds are taking over- have you done a soil test to see what’s going on? Are you in clay soil?

We just put in a new lawn this past late spring/early summer. We added a lot of soil amendments (several dump loads of topsoil and sheep/crap). It came in fine. We watered it 3x p/day until established then switched to 2x every third day for a longer duration. Deep, infrequent watering encourages grass roots to go deeper for water, improving their ability to crowd out weeds. A lot of things can be done to help lawns establish without bags of chemicals.

You want the best solution?

Skip the weed and feed and just go with Scott’s winterguard and get down to good applications if you’re growing cool season grass. One application sometime this month and another application going with a slightly heavier rate in early November.

You’re doing the right thing with the crabgrass preventer and spring but depending on where you’re located and what you’re using you might need to follow up with a second application in three months.

As for the weeds treat those by hand with something like Scott’s weed be gone even if you use the lawn attachment is far more effective than try to get those little granulars to stick to the weeds in order to kill them off.

Hope that helps and keep us posted.
