Containers must be proportional to the size of the plant. For example, medium-sized plants require at least 5–7 gallon containers whereas big plants need pots that are more than 11 gallons. Remember, the type of container you choose plays a major role as well. Autoflowers love aerated soil that drains very well, so use breathable containers like fabric pots that allow maximum drainage.

Most people assume that autoflowers produce small yields, but they can’t be further from the truth. Get this straight — autoflowers can not only produce humongous yields, but the fact that they do so within 2 months isn’t a small feat! But, you gotta follow a small rulebook, so here are 7 tips and tricks to maximize yields in autoflowers if you’re struggling to get the best out of them.
Autoflowers don’t give you a lot of time, so it’s critical to plan beforehand. What medium are you going to use? Soilless, soil or hydroponics? What nutrients have you chosen? Have you grown autos before? Have you bought the lights? What about ventilation? Have you set up your grow room?
As previously mentioned, autoflowers are less forgiving when it comes to major or sustained errors, which means you must water your autoflowering girls properly.
60–65 days from planting your seeds. Since many autoflowers won’t get taller than 50–70cm, they are ideal for growing indoors, where space is often limited.
You also need to watch the temperature in your grow room. Cannabis does best at a moderately warm room temperature of 20–25°C. Any excess heat, but also cold spells or chilly nights, can stress your plants, slow their growth, and result in poorer yields.

As the lifespan of autoflowering cannabis is limited, it is less forgiving when it comes to major stressors and mistakes. When plants experience high amounts of stress, growth stalls; while this may be fine for conventional cannabis that can be kept in veg longer to recover, autoflowers don’t have that luxury—they will flower regardless. As such, it’s best to start autos in their final pot right from the get-go to avoid transplant shock.
As autos contain ruderalis genes, they are more robust than other marijuana plants. Remember, they are based on plants that could grow in the harsh Russian weather conditions. If there is a power outage, a typical cannabis plant will have its flowering and growth phases interrupted. This fact could play havoc with their growth cycle. You don’t have this problem with an autoflowering plant.
It is relatively easy to buy autoflowering seeds online. There is an increasing number of reputable websites that sell them. Alternatively, you can find them in a local dispensary, but purchasing the best autoflower seeds is a challenge at first.
The autoflowering phenomenon has only gained traction in recent years. Strains of this nature include Cannabis ruderalis genetics, a species of marijuana first described by D. E. Janischewsky, a Russian botanist, in 1924. When you cross ruderalis genetics with indica or sativa varieties, you get plants that grow and flower without your intervention.
If you grow in a typical manner, you have to ensure your grow room has light-proof sealing. It is a disaster if this gets breached. In contrast, a light leakage has no discernible impact on the flowering stage of your autoflower marijuana.
The 20/4 schedule is potentially a happy medium. However, the 18/6 option is the most sensible because your plants need a few hours of darkness each day for specific metabolic processes. Whatever additional yield you attain from constant lighting is more than offset by the increase in your lighting bill!
When they start flowering, prune them for up to a week into the flowering stage and do NOT top them.
Transplanting auto-flowering seeds is more complicated than their photoperiod brethren. However, it is a myth to suggest it is impossible to do so more than once successfully. You can re-pot an autoflower if you are extremely careful. If you need to transplant your autos to a larger pot, make sure they end up in the same soilless growing medium or soil as before. Also, complete the process before their dark period when their growing medium is dry.
