How to make CBD Lotion, Cream, and Salve with CBD Oil
CBD topicals possess multiple fantastic benefits for your skin and body. Not only do they provide fast, effective, and targeted relief from pain and inflammation, but they’re also making waves in the skincare world, helping to achieve a variety of skincare goals.
Whether you’re looking to unlock the anti-aging, anti-bacterial, or anti-inflammatory properties of CBD, learning how to make CBD lotion at home could save you a lot of hard-earned cash.
In this article we’ll teach you:
- How to make CBD lotion
- How to make CBD cream

- How to make CBD lotion with hemp flower
- How to dose your CBD lotion
How to make CBD lotion
Containing around 75% water, CBD lotions are the lightest form of topicals. Because of this, they are easier to apply and will absorb into the skin more quickly. This makes them a great option if you want to apply your CBD topical to larger areas of the body, quickly and easily.
Unless you have very dry skin, lotions are also usually preferred for any type of facial skincare as they are the least greasy when applied.
CBD lotion recipe
CBD lotion has just four main ingredients; an oil base, water, an emulsifying agent, and your favorite CBD oil.
The type of oil base you use will affect the texture of your CBD lotion, so you may want to experiment with a few different types of oil when you begin making your own at home. To achieve a lighter consistency, you should consider using almond, sunflower, or apricot oil, or for a slightly denser texture, you can choose a heavier oil base, such as argon, jojoba, or coconut oil.
If you want to add a larger amount of CBD oil to increase the strength of your lotion, then you may also want to reduce the amount of oil base you use (very slightly) in order to accommodate it.
CBD lotion ingredients
- ¼ cup of oil base (we used sweet almond oil)
- Up to ¾ cup of distilled, mineral, or spring water
- ¾ oz of beeswax
- 1 fl oz (30ml) CBD oil (we used our 1500mg full-spectrum oil)
- Essential oils (optional)
- Using a bain-marie or double boiler, gently heat up the oil base and beeswax and stir well until the wax melts.
- Add your CBD oil and stir until it’s fully incorporated into the mixture.
- Remove from the heat and add a couple of drops of essential oil (if you’re using any).
- Allow to cool slightly and then slowly add your water while stirring continuously to check the consistency of the lotion (you may not need the full amount of water).
- Pour your lotion into a wide-rimmed mason jar for storage (or something similar that has a tight-fitting lid).
How to make CBD cream
CBD cream is made using more oil than water, so it will be much thicker than CBD lotion. This makes creams more suitable for those desiring heavier duty application, as well as those with dry skin types.
The winter months can be particularly harsh on your skin, so may wish to consider switching up from lotion to cream for a few months every year to help give your body the extra hydration it needs over this time.
CBD cream recipe
CBD cream also utilizes just four main ingredients; oil base, water, emulsifying agent, and CBD oil, but the oil base and water are added in different ratios to change the consistency of the end product.
Again, the type of oil base you use will affect the texture of your CBD cream and the amount can be adjusted if you need to add a larger amount of CBD oil to achieve the strength you desire.
CBD cream ingredients
- ¾ cup of oil base (we used jojaba oil)
- ¼ cup of distilled, mineral, or spring water
- ¾ oz of beeswax
- 1 fl ox (30ml) of CBD oil (we used our 1500mg full-spectrum oil)
- Essential oils (optional)
- Over a low heat, warm your oil base and beeswax in a bain-marie (or double boiler) and stir until the wax has melted.
- Add your CBD oil and stir well until it has an even consistency.
- Remove from the heat and let it sit for five minutes before adding any essential oils of your choice.
- Add your water slowly while stirring continuously until your cream is at the desired consistency.
- Transfer the cream out of the pan into an airtight container for storage.
How to make CBD salve
CBD salve is the thickest type of topical you can get and for this reason, it can be a little greasy when applied to your skin. Salves are great for intense CBD and moisture application and may prove to be the best option for relieving sore muscles and joints.
You should probably avoid applying a salve like this all over your face, but you can dab a little CBD salve directly onto problem areas.
CBD salve recipe
A CBD salve is also the easiest type of topical you can make as it contains just three essential ingredients; an oil base, an emulsifying agent, and your CBD oil. It’s the complete lack of water in this recipe that makes the salve so thick against the cream and lotion.
CBD Salve Ingredients
- 1 cup of oil base (we used coconut oil this time)
- 1 oz of beeswax
- 1 fl oz (30ml) of CBD oil (we used our 1500mg full-spectrum oil)
- Essential oils (optional)
- Using a double boiler or bain-marie, warm up the beeswax and oil base over a low heat and stir until the wax has melted and the two ingredients have an even consistency.
- Add your CBD oil and stir well.
- Allow the mixture to cool slightly before adding a drop or two of essential oil to the mixture.
- As the mixture cools down, the salve will get thicker and thicker, so you’ll want to transfer it out of the pan or bowl into a small jar (for storage) before it sets completely.
How to make CBD lotion from hemp flower
When you’re making CBD lotion from hemp flower, you can either learn how to make CBD oil with hemp flower and then follow the instructions above, or you can decarboxylate the flower and add it directly to the lotion recipe above, in place of the CBD oil.
The only difference is that you’ll need to cook the mixture for longer (around 30 to 45 minutes) and then sieve the mixture through a cheesecloth before cooling and adding the water.
How to dose your CBD lotion
The recipes above will all yield around one cup of lotion, cream, or salve, which equates to around 128 grams. Choose the dose of CBD you want (per gram of lotion) and multiply it by 128 to find how many milligrams you will need to add to the entire recipe.
We used a full bottle of our 1,500mg CBD oil, meaning our CBD lotion had around 12 milligrams of CBD per gram of lotion (1,500mg divided by 128g).
To achieve a similar strength CBD lotion using our Sour Space Candy CBD Flower, you would need around 8.5 grams of ground-up, decarboxylated flower. At 17.3% CBD, our Sour Space Candy has 173mg of CBD per gram, meaning that 8.5 grams will yield just under 1,500mg of CBD in total.
Benefits of homemade CBD topicals
Now you know how to make CBD infused lotion, using either CBD oil or hemp flower, but you may be wondering “can you add CBD oil to lotion that you already have sitting at home?” and the answer is yes!
You could mix a drop of CBD oil into your usual moisturizing lotion (in your palms) before applying it, or even add some CBD oil to the entire bottle of lotion. If you find that the lotion and CBD oil aren’t infusing properly, then try heating them gently while stirring them together.
The main benefit of making the lotion yourself (from scratch) is that you have total control over what ingredients go in it. You can choose an oil base that best suits your skin type and control the consistency you want by adding more or less water.
If you want to make a CBD lotion for anti-aging then you could add extra antioxidants, such as vitamin E or rosemary essential oil. For acne, you can choose extra anti-microbial and antibacterial ingredients, such as tea tree essential oil. Or, if you want to make a CBD lotion to relieve sore joints and muscles, then you can add a drop or two of eucalyptus and lavender essential oils, to help cool and soothe your aches and pains.
CBD Infused Body Lotion Recipe
Cannabis infused skin care products have been around for millenia. Different cultures and civilizations used cannabis topicals as a form of healing and health maintenance for a huge variety of ailments. Potions, salves and topicals have been a staple in many cultures from Asia to the Middle East.
Cannabis infused skin care products are an amazing way to use CBD with almost no psychoactive effects at all. These topical lotions have been reported to be used for pain relief by applying them directly where ever there is discomfort due to muscle tension, arthritis or even migraines.
Skin is the largest organ on the human body and very good at absorbing nutrients when applied directly to it. CBD patches work very well with cannabis infused skin care products because they allow specific nutrients and to pass through the skin without being broken down by the digestive track.
CBD has many soothing properties, one of which allows for making CBD lotion with it.
Making CBD lotion is simple and easy to do at home and it only takes about 30 minutes or less.
How To Make Homemade CBD Lotion
Making CBD lotion at home is easy to do, and you don’t need any special equipment or ingredients. It takes about 30 minutes or less depending on how much you make at one time. You can always make a large amount and store it for later use as well.
Making CBD lotion begins with a carrier oil. Lotion can be made by making coconut oil infusions with coconut oil, cannabis flowers/trim and a cooking pot.
Many different oils can make a great CBD lotion, but the most common is coconut oil. Coconut oil has many health benefits and adding CBD to it makes a wonderful CBD lotion.
You need high quality organic material, which means that any male plants, seeds or stems should not be present in your mixture. If you do not have access to fresh cannabis flowers or trim, then there are other options such as either kief or hash.
Add your product to a pot of water and heat it up. Make sure that you do not heat your CBD infused coconut oil above 300 degrees Fahrenheit for more than 20 minutes to maintain the integrity of the cannabinoids.
Once you have made the cannabis infused coconut oil, strain it through a fine mesh strainer or cheese cloth and put it in a dish. Allow your infusion to cool until the oil solidifies and separates from the water, which takes about 10 – 15 minutes.
How to Make CBD Lotion from CBD Isolate
Pure, 99% CBD isolate is a crystallized form of the cannabinoid CBD. It contains zero THC. The powder is tasteless and odorless. For each gram of CBD isolate, you are getting at least 990mg of CBD with our isolate.
But how can you use this very potent CBD powder?
Using CBD topically has been suggested to help pain deep within the muscles and joints. Topicals include a wide range of products from cream to salves to massage oil.
One of the easiest things to make is CBD massage/body oil.
500mg CBD Massage/Body Oil:
2 cups of olive oil
½ gram of CBD isolate
A few drops of your favorite essential oil (we like rosemary or lavender)
Mix thoroughly for the CBD isolate to dissolve and disperse throughout the solution. Adding a little salt or sugar can turn your massage oil into an effective body scrub. You can read more about olive oil and skin care (as well as more modifications to this recipe) here .
If you want to make a CBD lotion with a lotion you already have on hand – you can! The 99% CBD isolate dissolves best in oil-based substances. Lotion containing oil will better mix with the isolate, but any lotion will be thick enough to disperse the CBD isolate throughout the mixture.
Common Questions About CBD Lotion
What is CBD lotion?
CBD lotion is the same thing as CBD cream, it’s just concentrated into a liquid form. What this means to you is that the active ingredients are extracted using grain alcohol (to extract cannabinoids like CBD) or olive oil (for flavonoids). The process of making CBD lotion involves filtering and heating steps, which can lead to losing some of the plant’s active ingredients. But this method is considered a ‘clean’ extraction because there aren’t any extra chemicals involved, which will affect your end product.
What is CBD lotion good for?
CBD lotion is a great remedy for many skin problems. It is a mixture of essential oils that have been infused with CBD. CBD lotion helps to relieve pain and heal your skin at the same time. If you suffer from pain in common areas such as hands, knees, legs or back then applying this lotion can bring a great relief. What is more it will soothe dryness, rashes, eczema, psoriasis and acne.
How does CBD lotion work?
CBD lotion is a popular product because it works great for localized pain relief, like sore muscles and joints, but it won’t get you high like traditional cannabis strains do.
How to use CBD lotion?
You can use CBD lotion after showering, before applying moisturizer or makeup, or anytime your skin needs some extra TLC. With any topical hemp oil product, it’s always best to test a small patch on your skin first to make sure you don’t have any allergies.
CBD lotion can be applied to any area of skin and can also be used on the face, but it is always best to check with your doctor before using topicals if you have sensitive skin or suffer from a skin-related condition like psoriasis or rosacea.

Adding CBD Isolate into a Larger Base (Topical)
Creating your own infusions with CBD isolate can be a great way to completely customize your CBD experience. Here we will include a simple recipe to create your own CBD topical using our Active CBD oil Isolate.
CBD Oil Uses
Many people are using CBD oil today, and considering how it is non-toxic and doesn’t produce any adverse side effects in the user there has been a huge amount of interest. Using this form of CBD gives you all the benefits of cannabidiol without having to worry about THC content which can cause impairment.
So, if you are considering using CBD topicals but don’t know where to start then here are some guidelines you should follow when making up your own topical lotion with CBD isolate.
The first thing that you should do when looking into making your own CBD cream or CBD oil for pain relief is determine what kind of base you want to use because not every type of base will work correctly with CBD. For example, if you are using a CBD cream that is water-based then it will absorb into the skin much better.
The reason for this is because CBD topicals are oil based products which means they don’t mix well with water. On the other hand, an oil-based topical cream will leave the user feeling greasy since CBD topicals are made up of oils themselves. So, to avoid any problems with CBD absorption it’s best to use a base that is not only compatible but also works well with cannabidiol so it doesn’t degrade its properties either.
When deciding on what type of base to go for you should always pick one that has been made specifically for making topicals and not something that you use for your regular skincare routine.
Using the wrong base can make CBD behave unpredictably which will ultimately lead to a sub-optimal experience.
This is not to say you shouldn’t make topicals yourself at all but rather be extremely careful what kind of base you are using since CBD oil isn’t always compatible with many product bases.
C annabidiol Topical Bases
When it comes to choosing a cannabidiol topical base there are several choices, each having their own merits and drawbacks.
For example, if you want to avoid any greasiness or stickiness then an oil based cream or lotion is probably the best choice for you because it will absorb into the skin much than other types on the market.
Oil base topical lotions and creams are perfect for those looking for both relief from pain and more healthy skin as well. However, if you don’t want to deal with an oily or greasy CBD topical then a water based cream or gel might be the right choice for you.
Water-based CBD topicals work by infusing CBD into water and mixing it with other ingredients before adding it to any kind of cream base. They’re mostly free of CBD impurities since the only potential additive is some kind of organic solvent but this is not always necessary. The benefit here is that they can easily be absorbed into the skin, allowing them to deliver their benefits much faster than oil-based which take longer due to having to be absorbed through the skin. However, since they are water-based CBD topicals are not as effective at treating pain as their oil-based counterparts due to how quickly they’re able to absorb into the blood stream. The drawbacks don’t end there either since CBD topicals that are made up of mostly water can contribute toward making your skin more oily over time.
With all this being said it’s best to decide what kind of base you want before beginning any kind of CBD topical so you have a good idea what you should be looking for when it comes time to buy or make one. While not every type is perfect for delivering cannabidiol, each has its own unique attributes which allow them to excel in one area more than another. For example, CBD oils and gels are perfect for those looking for skin benefits as well as pain relief while water-based lotions and creams work best when you want pain relief without having your skin greasy or oily afterward.
Creating a CBD topical base oil is one way that CBD oil companies can make money while meeting end users’ needs. One of the first CBD topical base oils was 300mg CBD Vape Oil. This additive is designed to be added into any vape, and since it has no flavor, can be used with any type of e-liquid (for those that like sweet flavors) or even with unflavored vape juice. The oil can be added to your normal vape equipment, just like e-liquid. It comes in different flavors, including CBD citrus flavor and CBD menthol flavor.
CBD has been proven to work in topically applied creams and cannabis salves for pain relief in illnesses such as arthritis . CBD is also known to reduce inflammation , which is why it is often used in muscle pain relief creams. This makes cannabis infused oil an ideal candidate for CBD topical base oil.
